Lunch With a Local
Step away from the tourist trails and into the rural heart of Madeira, where a local family welcomes you into their home for an intimate, slow-paced traditional lunch. Nestled in the lush highlands of Camacha region, this experience offers a genuine taste of Madeiran hospitality, heritage, and home-cooked flavor.
Prepared slowly over a wood-fired stove, the meal brings together island traditions and seasonal ingredients, just as they've been cooked for generations.
Menu
You’ll be greeted with regional starters, such as:
- Pickled vegetables
- Pickled homemade bread or escarpiada, a cornmeal (a locally preserved mackerel)
- Served with homemade bread or escarpiada, a cornmeal flatbread traditionally from Porto Santo
For the main course, your host will prepare one of Madeira’s hearty comfort dishes:
- Wheat Soup – a rich, rustic broth made with grains and vegetables
or - Slow-cooked Pork Stew – pork braised with wine and island spices, a festive dish from the Porto Moniz region, typically served at Christmas
or - Cabbage and Salted Pork Rice – a humble but flavorful countryside classic
To finish, you’ll enjoy a slice of “Bolo Família”, a homemade family cake passed down through generations.
Throughout the meal, you’ll be served local drinks, including:
- A dry regional wine from Porto da Cruz
- And artisan cider, crafted by small-scale producers in the region
This is more than just a meal — it’s a glimpse into the soul of Madeira, shared around the table in warm company, with stories, tradition, and flavors you won’t find in any restaurant.
