Rum Masterclass
On the North coast of Madeira, in the town of Porto da Cruz, about 45 minutes from Funchal, you will find Engenhos do Norte. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Madeira was the most famous producer of sugar in the world, precisely in the period when this commodity was much more valuable than it is today, so much so that Europeans at the time knew it as “White Gold” and They used it in cooking, sweets and even as a decorative and ostentatious element. The Porto da Cruz mill is one of three old mills in operation in Madeira.
Built in 1927, it still uses machines from that time today, being the only one in Europe to use steam as a driving force. In this Rum masterclass, 5 types of Rum will be tasted to be served with sugarcane honey bread:
