One Island, Completely Different Journeys: How We Design Madeira Around the Traveller

Madeira may be a relatively small island, but the way it can be experienced is remarkably diverse.

For some travellers, the perfect Madeira journey is about mountains, walking, and being immersed in nature. For others, it means exceptional food, local wines, and long lunches overlooking the Atlantic. Some want privacy and relaxation; others want to understand the island through its people, culture, and traditions.

At INSIDER, we believe the starting point of every journey should therefore be very simple: Who is the traveller? Not: which experiences should we sell?

The Active Traveller

Madeira naturally appeals to travellers who want to spend time outdoors. Mountain landscapes, levada walks, coastal routes, cycling, and time at sea can all become part of the journey.

But active travel does not need to mean following the island’s busiest routes or filling every day with physical activity. With private guides and carefully planned logistics, we adapt each day to the client's ability, interests, weather conditions, and preferred pace—combining discovery with comfort and flexibility.

The Food & Wine Lover

For some guests, understanding Madeira begins at the table. Local producers, traditional flavours, Madeira wine, contemporary restaurants, and private culinary experiences provide a very different way of discovering the island.

Rather than treating gastronomy as a simple addition to the itinerary, we use it as the thread connecting entire days—combining landscapes, people, and places around food and wine.

The Slow Traveller

Not every luxury journey needs to be busy. Some clients value time above everything else: a relaxed morning, a scenic drive without a fixed checklist, a long lunch, an afternoon at sea, or simply enjoying their hotel.

For these travellers, our role is often to do less—but choose better. Madeira is particularly well suited to this style of travel because nature, gastronomy, and culture can be combined comfortably without requiring constant hotel changes or complicated logistics.

The Curious Traveller

Other clients want to go beyond the obvious. They may be interested in local history, architecture, family-owned businesses, traditional villages, artisans, or simply understanding how people live on the island today.

These journeys are built around encounters and context rather than landmarks. This is where local knowledge and private guiding become especially valuable, allowing the itinerary to move beyond the most visited locations and reveal a more personal side of Madeira.

Families and Multi-Generational Travel

A family journey requires yet another approach. Different ages, energy levels, and interests need to coexist within the same program.

Private transportation, flexible timings, and activities that can be adapted on the day allow grandparents, parents, and children to experience Madeira together without the itinerary becoming overly rigid. For us, the goal is not to design separate holidays for different generations, but to find experiences that everyone can genuinely enjoy.

There Is No Standard Madeira Itinerary

This is perhaps the most important point. The same five or seven nights in Madeira can become entirely different journeys depending on who is travelling.

An itinerary should not begin with a list of tours. It should begin with an understanding of the client: their interests, their pace, what they have enjoyed elsewhere, what they wish to avoid, and what would make this particular journey memorable for them. Only then do we start designing.

The INSIDER Approach

As a boutique DMC, INSIDER works exclusively with tailor-made private travel. We combine local expertise with private drivers, specialist guides, and a curated network of experiences to create journeys around the traveller rather than asking the traveller to fit into a predefined program.

Because Madeira may be one island. But there is never just one way to experience it.
